18 - Pays de la Loire

Another large region of France, Pays de la Loire occupies a large portion of France's western coastal region. In addition to miles and miles of sandy beaches, you can also explore the quiet valleys further inland. Racing fans can check out the annual car race "24 heures" that attracts visitors from all over the world.

19 - Picardy

The region to the north, Picardy has been the historic center of france since Clovis made it the capital of the Franks. Later kings were crowned in this area just about 50 miles from Paris. You'll also find enormous lakes and famous architecture spotted throughout the region.

20 - Poitou Charentes

On the western coast, Poitou Charentes is one of the brightest parts of the Atlantic coast. Over 2,200 hours of sunshine per year make it a great place to visit in any season. Numerous resorts, spas and tourist accommodations can be found near the coast, while the inland offers a quieter view of the warm western seaboard.

21 - Provence Alpes-Côte d'Azur

This massive region to the southeast of France is huddled between the Mediterranean and the Alps. Its climate is mild, its scenery is unforgettable, and its cultural and architectural history as rich as its vegetation. Because of the Alps catching warm air from the sea, Provence Alpes-Côte d'Azur remains warm even through the winter. Tropical vegetation such as aloe and cactus grows on the stark mountain sides, a strange sight in this part of Europe.

22 - Rhône Alpes

Just two hours from Paris, the Rhône Alpes region has a thick history that's easily uncovered by the enterprising tourist. Sitting alongside ancient Roman structures are over 30 graduate business schools, nine universities and international research centers, making Rhône Alpes a mixing bowl of the old and the new. Wines such as Côtes-du-Rhône and local dishes and cheeses make it a destination well worth your time.
