Lake Hubbard, Texas

Hubbard Lake is an excellent place to plan a relaxing getaway. Located in northern Michigan, about an hour and a half north of Saginaw and about 45 minutes south of Alpena, Hubbard Lake in Alcona County is known for its bass, trout, walleye, and yellow perch fishing as well as a place for families to escape the city for a week in the summer.

Hubbard Lake Attractions

Hubbard Lake is seven miles wide and two miles long. It's Michigan's second largest freshwater lake and a favorite of vacationers and retirees. Among the many attractions in the area are:

  • Fishing - Hubbard Lake is known for its excellent bass, trout, walleye, and yellow perch fishing and as a winter ice-fishing spot. Many rental properties have boating docks and fishing piers. For more fishing opportunities, Lake Huron is only a few miles away.
  • Golf - Northern Michigan is known for its many golf courses, and Alcona County is no exception. The area offers dozens of public and private golf courses. One of the best, and most popular, of these is White Pine National Golf Course, in nearby Spruce Michigan.
  • Exploring Local History - The Hubbard Lake region is rich in local history. A former lumbering capital, the region still sports remnants of that mid-19th century architecture. Among these is the historic Sturgeon Point Lighthouse on Lake Huron, built in 1869 and one of the oldest lighthouses on the Great Lakes.
  • Other Outdoor Activities - In addition to fishing and golf, the Hubbard Lake area offers a wealth of summer and winter sports. Among these are hiking and motorbiking in the summer and snowmobiling and cross-country skiing in the winter. The nearby Huron and Au Sable National Forests offer ample opportunities for all varieties of outdoor sports.
  • Just Outside of Town - Hubbard Lake is just a short drive away from other northern Michigan vacation areas, such as Mackinaw Island. The 19th-century resort, with its pillared Grand Hotel, and horse-draw carriages, makes an interesting and educational day excursion from Hubbard Lake.

Finding Vacation Rentals

The Hubbard Lake area offers a number of cottages, cabins, private homes, and condos for rent. Most abut the water and some offer private docks. Amenities vary widely, with some offering Internet access, cable TV, and other modern features, and others being more rustic abodes. Most rentals sleep from two to six persons.Like most vacation rentals and many bed and breakfast inns, Hubbard Lake vacation rentals generally require a 20 to 50 percent deposit with the balance due 30-60 days prior to your arrival. Payments are usually non-refundable should you have to cancel your plans unless the property can be re-rented.

A number of online brokers represent cottage-owners that are seeking to rent their property for a week, a night, or a season. Among these are:

  • Great Rentals - This broker generally has a wide selection of cottages, from small bungalows to large cottages. Amenities vary greatly with each property. Some include Internet access, modern kitchens, and cable TV. Others are more rustic. Many also offer lake access and water views.
  • Michigan.Org - Michigan.org, the official tourism site for the state of Michigan, includes a page for cottage and cabin rentals at Hubbard Lake. Again, the size and amenities offered at each property varies widely.
  • Michigan Vacations - Another Michigan vacation Web site with a cottage listing page for Hubbard Lake.
